A deck is a structure, and around here it is usually a tall one
Between Dalton, Ringgold and the ridges running up toward Chattanooga, level back yards are the exception. Most of the decks we build are elevated, some of them substantially, which changes what the job actually is. At two feet off the ground a deck is a platform. At eight feet it is a structure carrying live load in the air, and the footings, the post sizing, the lateral bracing and the connection back to the house all become load-bearing decisions rather than details.
The ledger connection is the one worth understanding as a homeowner, because it is the most common serious failure on residential decks anywhere. The ledger is the board bolted to the house that carries one whole edge of the deck. If it is fixed with the wrong fasteners, or fixed through siding without flashing so water gets trapped behind it and rots the rim joist it is bolted to, then the failure when it comes is sudden and takes the whole deck with it. Flashing that connection properly is not a finishing detail.
The other thing that decides whether a deck gets used is shade and stairs. A big platform in full west sun gets used twice a summer. A stair run with an inconsistent rise is something you notice with your feet every single time. Neither costs meaningful money to get right at the design stage, and neither is fixable afterwards.
- Footings sized and dug. Concrete footings to depth and diameter for the load, not blocks resting on topsoil.
- Ledger flashed and bolted. Proper fasteners and flashing behind, so the board carrying half your deck is not sitting in trapped water.
- Consistent stair rise. Set out and measured so every tread is the same. It is the part you feel every day.
- Railing you can see through. Cable, hog-wire, black aluminum or timber — chosen for the view as much as the code.
- Treated pine or composite. Both built the same way structurally; the choice is about maintenance and budget, and we will talk it through honestly.
- Stained when it is ready. New treated timber has to dry before it will take stain properly. We will tell you when, rather than doing it too early.
How we build a deck
Work out where the sun and the door are
Before size, we work out which part will be usable in July, where you come out of the house, and where the stairs should land. A deck designed around the door and the shade gets lived on; one designed around maximum square footage frequently does not.
Footings and posts
Footings dug to depth and poured, posts set and braced. On the elevated decks that are normal here, this is the stage that carries everything, and it is worth the time it takes.
Ledger, frame and blocking
The ledger is flashed and bolted to the house properly. Joists, beams and blocking go in square and level, with the frame laid out so board joints land where you want them rather than wherever they fall.
Decking, stairs and railing
Boards down, then the stair run set out for consistent rise and run, then railing. Cable and hog-wire need their posts thought about in advance because the tension has to go somewhere.
Stain and clean-up
Offcuts and fixings cleared. Staining happens when the timber is dry enough to take it; if that is weeks away we will tell you so rather than sealing moisture in.

Deck Building Questions
Treated pine costs considerably less up front and, stained every few years, performs well. Composite costs more at the start and then asks very little of you, which is the real argument for it. Our honest steer: if the deck is large, high up, or you know yourself well enough to know you will not re-stain it, composite pays for itself. If budget is binding, a properly built treated deck is not a structural compromise.
Usually, particularly once it is more than a low platform, and the requirements differ across Whitfield County, the City of Dalton and the Tennessee jurisdictions. Height above grade and attachment to the house are the two things that most often trigger it. We will tell you what we understand applies to your deck when we quote it.
Only if the deck was built to carry one. A roof adds serious load, so the footings, posts and framing underneath have to be sized for it. If a cover is even a possibility, tell us at the design stage — building for it now costs a fraction of retrofitting the structure later, and sometimes retrofitting is not possible at all.
Height itself is not the constraint; what changes with height is the footing design, the post sizing and the lateral bracing, plus the railing becoming a serious safety item rather than a style choice. Tall decks over a walk-out basement are common around here and are ordinary work. They do need pricing on the site rather than off a square-foot number.
Not immediately. New pressure-treated timber holds a lot of moisture and stain applied too early sits on the surface, seals water in and peels. Depending on the season and the timber it can be weeks or months. We will tell you when it is ready rather than staining it on the last day because it looks better in a photograph.
Sometimes, and it is good value when the frame is genuinely sound. What we will do first is get underneath and look at the joists, the posts and above all the ledger connection. There is no sense putting new boards on a structure that is failing beneath them, and the ledger is where we look hardest.
